Part One: The Tape That Made My Brother Run
The moment my father’s face appeared on the dusty television screen, my brother tried to escape.
Greg turned toward the open garage door, moving so quickly that he nearly stumbled over the phone he had dropped minutes earlier. Its cracked screen scraped against the concrete beneath his shoe.
I stepped into his path.
“No,” I said.
He froze.
“You insisted that the entire family be here. Now you’re going to stay and hear what Dad wanted us to hear.”
Behind me, the video had paused on an image of my father sitting beside an unfinished wooden crib. Nearly twenty relatives stood across the driveway and lawn, watching in stunned silence.
Greg had been uneasy from the instant I unlocked the garage, but when we first saw the furniture inside, I assumed that was what had upset him.
There was a handcrafted crib decorated with carved moons. A matching dresser had tiny stars engraved across its drawers. Beside them stood a changing table and a rocking chair with wooden clouds shaped beneath its arms.
Then I found the videotapes.
The first label read:
FOR CHLOE—PLAY WITH THE WHOLE FAMILY PRESENT.
The second said:
GREG’S PROMISES.
The instant Greg saw his name, his phone slipped from his hand.
Now Dad’s attorney, Ms. Richards, pressed play again.
My father’s tired face moved on the screen.
“Greg,” he said, looking directly into the camera, “I gave you three chances to tell your sister the truth.”
Greg closed his eyes.
Six days earlier, I would have said there was no one in the world I trusted more than my brother.
By the time that recording ended, I understood that nearly every relationship in my life had been quietly rearranged by his lies.
