After My Father Passed Away, His Lawyer Made Me Open a Garage Locked for Five Years—What I Found Exposed My Brother’s Cruelest Secret

Part Three: Five Years Behind a Locked Door

Dad’s detached garage stood at the far end of the driveway.

For five years, no one had been allowed inside.

He had boarded the windows, replaced the lock, and kept the only key with him. Whenever I asked what he was doing in there, his answer never changed.

“Not yet, Chloe.”

I had assumed it contained tools, unfinished projects, or pieces of furniture he was not ready to show anyone.

I had never imagined it contained the truth about my family.

In the living room, Ms. Richards asked Greg, Aunt Sandy, Uncle Nolan, Sadie, and me to gather around her.

“Byron specifically named each of you,” she explained. “All of you must be present when the garage is opened.”

Greg gave a short laugh.

“All this ceremony for Chloe to open a door?”

“Your father was very precise,” Ms. Richards replied. “Chloe must unlock it. She must enter first. No one else may cross the threshold until she gives permission.”

“Why Chloe?” Greg asked.

“Because that was Byron’s decision.”

Relatives followed us outside, gathering along the driveway and across the lawn.

Aunt Sandy squeezed my arm.

“Whatever is in there, you’re not facing it alone.”

Greg stepped close and lifted his phone.

“Let’s record this,” he said. “Everyone will want to remember what Dad left us.”

He placed one arm around my shoulders while keeping the camera pointed toward the garage.

“Put the phone away.”

“I’m only documenting it.”

“I don’t want this recorded.”

I stepped out from beneath his arm.

For the briefest moment, irritation flashed across his face. Then his familiar smile returned.

“Fine.”

He lowered the phone but continued holding it.

The key resisted when I inserted it into the lock. My hand trembled as I pulled it out and tried again.

Behind me, Joshua spoke gently.

“What do we do next?”

I looked back at him.

“We try again.”

This time, the lock turned.

The garage door lifted with a long metallic groan. Dust swirled through a thin shaft of afternoon light.

At first, I could only see several large shapes hidden beneath pale cloths.

I stepped inside alone and pulled away the nearest cover.

The rocking chair appeared first.

It had been sanded smooth and carefully polished. Wooden clouds curved beneath the armrests. When I lifted one side, I saw a name carved underneath.

Chloe.

My breath caught.

“He made this for me.”

Joshua remained outside the doorway.

“He knew we hoped to have children someday.”

I turned toward him.

“You told him?”

Joshua nodded.

I looked across the garage again.

The crib. The changing table. The dresser.

Dad had built an entire nursery for a child who did not yet exist.

He had spent five years preparing something for a future he might never see.

Behind Joshua, Greg spoke.

“So that’s it? He kept this place locked for five years because of some baby furniture?”

His voice was too casual.

Sadie pointed past me.

“Chloe, what’s behind the crib?”

An old television sat on a metal cart. Several rows of videotapes had been arranged neatly beside it.

I walked toward them and read the first label aloud.

“‘For Chloe—play with the whole family present.’”

Then I picked up the second tape.

“‘Greg’s Promises.’”

A sharp crack echoed through the garage.

Greg’s phone had fallen from his hand.

The color drained from his face.

“I don’t know why Dad put my name on anything,” he said quickly.

Ms. Richards stepped inside.

“Byron instructed me to play the first recording.”

I turned toward my brother.

“Why do you look terrified?”

“I’m not terrified. Our father just died, and now we’re standing around staring at furniture he secretly built. I’m allowed to be upset.”

Greg had always known how to make defensiveness sound reasonable.

I moved away from the television.

“Play it.”
