I Signed the Divorce Papers While Pregnant With Triplets—A Year Later, I Returned Beside the One Man My Ex Could Never Defeat

Part Two: The Stranger in the Rain

I remained in the conference room until the receptionist gently told me the office was closing.

Outside, the storm had grown worse.

I stepped onto the sidewalk without an umbrella, barely noticing the cold water soaking through my dress.

I had nowhere to go.

Ryan had frozen our joint credit cards that morning. My parents had passed away years earlier. My closest friend lived in Chicago, and I was too ashamed to call her and admit how badly my life had fallen apart.

Then a giant digital billboard across the street changed.

Ryan appeared on the screen beside Savannah.

She wore a white designer dress. He stood with his arm around her waist.

The words beneath them read:

RYAN CALLOWAY AND SAVANNAH BROOKS ANNOUNCE THEIR ASPEN WEDDING CELEBRATION.

They were publicly announcing their wedding before our divorce had even been finalized.

Then I noticed what Ryan was wearing around his neck.

A small gold cross.

I had given it to him after we lost our first baby. On the back, I had engraved four words:

Hope will find us.

That cross had represented grief, healing, and the family we still dreamed of having.

Now he wore it beside another woman.

The sidewalk seemed to tilt.

A sudden pain tightened across my stomach.

I stopped walking.

“No,” I whispered.

Another pain followed, sharper than the first.

I bent forward, holding my stomach as rain poured down my face.

“Please,” I whispered to my babies. “Not yet.”

People began gathering, but their voices sounded far away.

Then a black SUV pulled to the curb.

A tall man stepped out without waiting for the driver to open his door. He crossed the sidewalk quickly and knelt beside me in the rain.

“Can you hear me?” he asked.

I tried to answer, but another wave of pain stole my breath.

He removed his coat and placed it around my shoulders.

“Call an ambulance,” he ordered someone nearby. “Tell them she’s pregnant and having contractions.”

His voice was calm, controlled, and strangely reassuring.

“My babies,” I managed to say. “There are three.”

He looked directly into my eyes.

“Then we have four people to protect.”

I gripped his sleeve.

“I can’t lose them.”

“You’re not alone,” he said. “Stay with me.”

The last thing I heard before everything faded was his steady voice.

“You’re going to be okay.”

When I woke, white hospital lights glowed above me.

A doctor explained that stress and dehydration had triggered early labor. They had managed to slow the contractions, but I would need strict bed rest and close monitoring.

My babies were safe.

For the moment.

I closed my eyes and cried with relief.

“Good,” a familiar voice said from the doorway. “You’re awake.”

The stranger from the rain stepped into the room.

He was no longer wearing his soaked suit. He had changed into a dark sweater and carried a paper cup of coffee.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I don’t even know your name.”

“Adrian Mercer.”

I stared at him.

Everyone in New York knew that name.

Adrian Mercer was the founder of Mercer Holdings, one of the country’s largest privately owned development and investment groups.

He was also Ryan’s greatest rival.

For years, Ryan had tried to win projects away from Mercer Holdings. He had failed every time.

“What were you doing outside that law office?” I asked.

“I had a meeting in the building next door.”

He placed the coffee on the windowsill.

“The hospital couldn’t reach your emergency contact. Your husband’s number went straight to voicemail.”

“He isn’t my husband anymore.”

Adrian glanced at my left hand.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. He isn’t.”

I expected Adrian to leave after confirming that I was safe.

Instead, he asked whether there was anyone he could call.

For the first time that day, I admitted the truth.

“No.”
