“Dad, Why Did Grandma Cut My Promise?”
Mark came home about two hours later.
The moment he walked through the door and saw Leo, he stopped.
He stared at our son’s head.
Then he slowly crouched down in front of him.
Mark touched the uneven patches of hair as gently as if they could somehow break.
“Hey, buddy,” he whispered. “What happened?”
Leo’s lower lip trembled.
“Grandma cut my promise.”
Mark looked at me.
I will never forget his expression.
He pulled Leo into his arms and closed his eyes.
“Hey, champ,” he whispered. “I’ve got you. I’ll take care of this.”
That night, after both children were asleep, I found Mark sitting alone at the kitchen table.
His laptop was open.
Beside it was a yellow legal pad covered with notes.
Names.
Dates.
School policies.
Phone numbers.
Questions.
Documentation.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
He didn’t look up immediately.
“Getting ready.”
“Ready for what?”
He finally looked at me.
“To make sure this never happens again.”
He wasn’t shouting.
He wasn’t angry in the way I expected.
He was calm.
And somehow, that frightened me more.
Over the next two days, Mark documented everything.
He contacted the school.
He clarified exactly who was authorized to pick up our children.
He made sure Brenda’s name was removed from any authorization that allowed her to collect them without our permission.
And then, on Saturday, Brenda called.
She sounded cheerful.
Almost as though Thursday had never happened.
She invited the entire family to Sunday dinner.
At her house.
She was making her famous oven-baked roast beef.
I opened my mouth to say absolutely not.
Mark reached for the phone.
“We’ll be there, Mom,” he said.
I stared at him.
After he hung up, he looked at me.
“Trust me, Amy.”
I didn’t know what he had planned.
But I trusted him.
