My mother looked me in the eye and said, “Your sister’s family will always come first. You’ll always be second.” My father nodded like the decision had already been carved in stone. So I said, “Then I’ll start choosing myself.” I separated my finances, made my own plans, and stepped away from the role they had assigned me. Then a major family crisis exploded.
