PART 2 My Mother-in-Law Burned My Legs Three Days After My Wedding—Then My Husband Slapped Me and Ordered Me to Apologize 9-009

articleUseronJune 13, 2026

“I reviewed the initial police report,” she said. “The camera footage is important. Very important. But Daniel has already contacted someone.”

Emily sat straighter on Rachel’s couch. “A lawyer?”

“Yes. That’s expected. What’s more concerning is that he may try to frame this as a family misunderstanding and push for private mediation.”

“Mediation?”

“He may say you’re emotional, overwhelmed, influenced by others.”

Emily almost smiled. “He already started.”

“Do not communicate with him directly,” Priya said. “Everything goes through counsel.”

Emily agreed.

After the call, she sat for a long time with her hands folded in her lap.

Rachel set a plate of toast beside her. “Eat.”

“I’m not hungry.”

“Eat two bites anyway.”

Emily obeyed, mostly because it was easier than arguing.

Her phone buzzed again.

This time, it was a message from the clinic director, Dr. Hall.

Emily, I heard you had an accident. Daniel called and said you may need extended leave due to stress. Please call when you can.

Emily read it twice.

Then a third time.

Daniel had called her workplace.

Rachel saw her face change. “What happened?”

Emily handed her the phone.

Rachel’s jaw tightened. “He’s trying to control the story.”

Emily called Dr. Hall immediately.

He answered on the second ring. “Emily? Are you all right?”

She closed her eyes at the kindness in his voice. “I’m safe. But I need to clarify something. Daniel should not be speaking on my behalf.”

There was a pause.

“I understand,” Dr. Hall said carefully.

Emily told him there had been a domestic incident and that legal steps were being taken. She did not give every detail. She did not need to. Dr. Hall listened quietly and assured her that her position was secure, that any leave would be handled confidentially, and that Daniel would receive no information.

Then he hesitated.

“Emily, there’s something else.”

Her stomach tightened. “What?”

“Yesterday evening, we received a login attempt on the administrative portal from an unfamiliar device. It used your credentials, but failed the second verification step.”

Emily went cold.

“When?” she asked.

“6:42 p.m.”

That was after she had left the hospital.

After the police report.

After Daniel knew she had called for help.

“Did anything get accessed?”

“We don’t believe so,” Dr. Hall said. “But our IT team locked the account and flagged it.”

Emily pressed her hand to her forehead.

Daniel had her password.

Or he had copied it.

The missing drive suddenly felt heavier than before.

“Thank you for telling me,” she said.

“Emily,” Dr. Hall said gently, “take care of yourself. We’ll handle the system side.”

After hanging up, Emily sat in silence.

Rachel didn’t speak either.

There are moments when life does not ask whether you are ready. It simply places the truth in front of you and waits.

Emily had thought she was dealing with a cruel mother-in-law and a husband who had chosen his mother over her.

Now she saw something else forming beneath it.

A pattern.

A plan.

A quiet attempt to reach into every part of her life: her home, her work, her reputation, her money, her safety.

And the worst part was that Daniel had smiled through all of it.

By the third day after the incident, Emily was moving with less pain, though every step reminded her of what had happened. Her burns needed care. Her lip had begun to heal. Bruises darkened before fading.

Priya filed for a protective order and began the annulment process, explaining that the short length of the marriage and the circumstances mattered, though nothing was guaranteed. Emily signed documents with a steady hand.

Laura called again that afternoon.
