Every text message.
Then I went back to work.
At exactly 6:03 that evening, my phone began vibrating.
Mom.
I let it ring.
Dad.
Ignored.
Vanessa.
Ignored.
Then the family group chat exploded.
Mom: Claire, why did your card stop working?
Vanessa: The hotel says the payment was declined!
Dad: Call us immediately.
I placed the phone face down on my desk.
Five minutes later another message appeared.
Vanessa: I already told everyone the bridal suite was paid for.
Then came another.
Fix it.
Not “please.”
Not “can we talk.”
Just the assumption that my job was to erase another disaster.
I smiled for the first time all day.
Then I muted the conversation.
The next morning I received an email from the hotel’s fraud department.
Because I worked in banking, they were requesting confirmation that the attempted transaction had been unauthorized before they officially documented it.
I called them.
“This is Claire Donovan.”
The representative immediately recognized my name.
“We’re sorry this happened, Ms. Donovan. The reservation holder insisted she had permission.”
“Did she provide anything in writing?”
A pause.
“No.”
“Did she claim to be the cardholder?”
