Here’s How to Remove White Patina from Glasses and Make Them Shine with a Cool Trick

articleUseronJuly 17, 2026
That cloudy, chalky film on your drinking glasses—often called “glass etching” or “mineral deposits”—is usually caused by hard water minerals (like calcium and magnesium) reacting with dishwasher detergent over time. While it may look like permanent damage, many cases are actually surface buildup—not etching—and can be reversed!
Here’s a simple, effective method using pantry staples:

✨ The Vinegar & Baking Soda Soak (For Mineral Buildup)

⚠️ First, test if it’s removable:
Rub the cloudy spot with a drop of white vinegar on a soft cloth. If it clears up, it’s mineral deposits—not etching. If it stays cloudy, it’s likely permanent etching (see note below).

What You’ll Need:

  • White distilled vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Warm water
  • Soft microfiber cloth or sponge
  • Bowl or sink

Step-by-Step:

  1. Soak in Vinegar
    • Fill a bowl with equal parts white vinegar and warm water.
    • Submerge cloudy glasses for 15–30 minutes.
    • For stubborn spots, soak up to 1 hour.
  2. Scrub Gently
