A woman thought her husband had returned from an ordinary business trip until she noticed a single word burned across his back. What she uncovered next would unravel their entire marriage. What happened?
My husband came home after what he claimed was a five-day business trip.
Grant dropped his suitcase beside the front door, pulled me into his arms, and sighed against my hair.
“I missed you.”
“I missed you too,” I said.
He looked exhausted, hugged me, told me the meetings had been a nightmare, and spent the evening talking about airports and delayed flights.
“The airline lost one of my bags for six hours,” he complained as I reheated the chicken I had made. “Then my return flight sat on the runway forever. I swear, Rachel, I could have driven home faster.”
“You went three states away.”
“Exactly. That’s how bad it was.”
Nothing seemed unusual.
Grant had taken business trips before.
He worked in regional sales for a furniture company and sometimes traveled to meet distributors.
I had never questioned those trips because he always returned with expense receipts, branded folders, and stories about dull conference rooms.
That night, as he got ready for bed, he pulled off his T-shirt.
His entire back was deeply tanned.
Except for one word.
Right across the middle, in pale skin, someone had clearly used sunscreen as a stencil.
CHEATER!
I stared at it from the bathroom doorway.
Grant was searching through a drawer, completely unaware of what had been burned into his skin.
“Did you move my gray shorts?” he asked.
“They’re in the laundry room.”
“Right. Thanks.”
I didn’t say a single word.
He had no idea it was there.
A few minutes later, he was asleep.
I lay beside him, listening to his breathing while the word on his back seemed to glow in the darkness.
For nearly an hour, I tried to invent an innocent explanation.
Maybe his coworkers had played a prank.
Maybe he had fallen asleep at a hotel pool, and someone had written it as a joke.
Maybe there had actually been a beach near his conference hotel.
But Grant had told me it rained during most of the trip. He had complained about being trapped indoors between meetings.
His suitcase sat near the bedroom door.
I quietly went through his suitcase.
There were no business documents. No conference badge. No receipts from restaurants near his hotel.
Instead I found a beach wristband, sand inside one of his shoes, and a receipt for two lounge chairs at a seaside resort.
The receipt was dated two days earlier.
Grant had paid for two chairs, two cocktails, and a couples’ massage.
My hands began to shake.
Then I found a folded note tucked into the side pocket.
It read, “I didn’t find out you had a wife until the third day. I’m sorry. He’s been lying to both of us.”
I sat there for a long time.
At first, I wanted to wake him up, throw the note in his face, and end the marriage right there.
Instead, I came up with a better idea.
The next morning, after he left for work, I bought a prepaid SIM card.
Using the new number, I sent him a single text.
“I’m the woman you lied to. The one you told you didn’t have a wife. Well… did you really think you’d get rid of me that easily?”
A few seconds later, I saw the message change to Read.
That was only the beginning of my plan.
