The Question Sarah Finally Asked
After the ceremony, Sarah found Matthew standing near the hospital window.
The city lights glittered below.
She slipped her hand into his.
“Mr. Matt?”
“Yes?”
“Do billionaires have families?”
“Some do.”
“Do you?”
Matthew glanced across the room.
Anne was speaking with a mother whose husband had recently undergone surgery. She listened with the same focused expression she had worn as a child whenever someone needed help.
“I didn’t for a long time,” he said.
Sarah considered his answer.
“Mommy says family can be people who keep showing up.”
“She’s right.”
“You keep showing up.”
Matthew swallowed.
Sarah leaned against his arm.
“So maybe you have one now.”
Before he could respond, she ran back toward Anne.
Matthew remained beside the window, unable to move.
He had spent most of his life building things people could see—companies, towers, factories, foundations.
But a five-year-old child had just given him something no amount of money could purchase.
A place to belong.
