Part 4: The Thought I Couldn’t Stop
I placed a hand on Chloe’s shoulder.
“Go play with your cousins, sweetheart.”
“But I’m telling the story.”
“I know, darling. You did a good job. Go play now.”
She skipped away without hesitation, unaware that she had just shattered the joyful mood of the entire party.
I stood slowly.
Every guest suddenly seemed fascinated by the ground, the food, or the plastic cups in their hands.
“Liam,” I said.
He lifted his head.
“Children say strange things,” he replied with an unconvincing laugh.
His voice sounded thin and unfamiliar.
“They do,” I said. “But Chloe didn’t invent that.”
“It was nothing.”
“Then explain it.”
He rubbed the back of his neck.
“I tripped at Marcus’s place.”
“You tripped?”
“Yes.”
“And while you were on the floor, you begged him not to tell anyone?”
“I was joking.”
“You asked for more time as a joke?”
Liam did not answer.
I looked at Marcus.
He appeared deeply uncomfortable, but there was also pity in his eyes.
That was when an awful possibility entered my mind.
Liam and Marcus spent time together every Sunday. Marcus had never married. He rarely talked seriously about dating. He had a key to our house and knew more about Liam than anyone else did.
Had they been hiding a relationship from me?
Was my husband kneeling in front of Marcus because they were involved in something intimate?
The idea felt wild and humiliating, but neither man’s behavior gave me another explanation.
Marcus saw the realization forming on my face.
His eyes widened.
Then he shook his head firmly.
No.
Not that.
He stood and moved beside Liam.
“You need to tell her,” Marcus said.
“Not here,” Liam whispered.
“Then you should have told her before it came out here.”
“Marcus, please.”
“I’ve kept quiet because you said you needed time. But look at Sarah. You can’t allow her to imagine something worse.”
Liam’s eyes filled with tears.
“I can’t do this.”
Marcus placed a hand on his shoulder.
Liam flinched as though the touch carried the full weight of the secret between them.
“I care about you,” Marcus said quietly. “That’s why I’m telling you this. You have to be honest with your wife.”
Then he turned toward me.
“If Liam doesn’t explain within the next few seconds, I will.”
The crack in Liam’s composure widened.
“What is happening?” I demanded. “What did Chloe see?”
Liam stared at the patio stones.
Around us, family members stood frozen. His mother covered her mouth with one hand. My sister moved closer to me but stopped short of touching my arm.
“Whatever it is,” I said, struggling to keep my voice steady, “I need to hear it from you. Not from Marcus and not from our daughter.”
Liam closed his eyes.
“It isn’t an affair.”
The word hung between us.
I released a breath I had not realized I was holding, but relief did not come.
“Then what is it?”
He looked at me.
“It’s about money.”
