At My Husband’s Birthday, My Daughter Pointed at My Husband’s Best Friend’s Boots and Said, “Daddy Cries There”

Part 5: The Truth Beneath Our Home

For several seconds, I could not understand why money would make my husband kneel on the floor and beg his best friend for silence.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Before he explains, Sarah, you should know something.”

Liam lowered his head.

Marcus continued.

“He didn’t waste the money on himself.”

That statement should have reassured me.

Instead, it filled me with a different kind of dread.

“What money?” I asked.

Liam drew a shaky breath.

“My father wasn’t the man everyone believed he was.”

His mother lowered her hand.

“What are you talking about?”

“After Dad died, I found records. Credit cards. Loans. Notices from lenders.”

His mother frowned.

“Your father was careful with money.”

“No,” Liam said softly. “He was careful about hiding what he did with it.”

The family grew still.

Liam swallowed.

“He had been gambling for years.”

His mother shook her head immediately.

“That isn’t true.”

“I wish it weren’t.”

“He never went to casinos.”

“He didn’t have to. He gambled online. He borrowed money, lost it, and then borrowed more to cover what he owed.”

His mother’s face slowly crumpled.

Liam continued before he lost the courage to speak.

“He used credit cards, personal loans, and money from the house. Every time the debt became too large, he convinced himself one big win would solve everything.”

“No,” she whispered again, but this time the word sounded less like a denial and more like grief.

“When he died, the estate couldn’t cover what he owed. Then the calls began. Collection letters arrived. Lawyers contacted us.”

Liam looked directly at me.

“I panicked.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did you do?”

“I took responsibility for the debts.”

I stared at him.

“You did what?”

“I thought I could protect Mom. I didn’t want the family to learn what Dad had done. I didn’t want people remembering him as a liar or a gambler.”

“So you paid his creditors?”

“I tried.”

“With what money?”

He looked away.

“Liam.”

“I took out a loan.”

“How much?”

He did not answer.

The silence told me the amount was larger than anything I was prepared to hear.

“What did you use as security?” I asked.

His eyes met mine.

“Our house.”

The world seemed to tilt.

I heard children laughing in the distance. A balloon scraped against the fence. Somewhere behind me, a plate was quietly placed on a table.

“You borrowed against our home?”

“Yes.”

“Without telling me?”

“Yes.”

“What else?”

“Our savings.”

My chest tightened.

“All of them?”

“Almost everything.”

I stepped back.

The affair I had feared only moments earlier vanished from my mind. In its place appeared our mortgage, Chloe’s future, our emergency savings, and every plan Liam and I had made together.

“You used our savings and put our house at risk?”

“I thought I could manage the payments.”

“Can you?”

His face answered before he did.

“I’m falling behind.”

My knees nearly gave way.

“If I can’t make the next payments,” he continued, “we could lose the house.”
