Part Five: The Invitation
A year after the divorce, Mercer Holdings hosted a charity gala to raise funds for family housing programs.
The invitation attracted politicians, business leaders, celebrities, and every important developer in New York.
Ryan received one because Calloway Development had donated to the foundation years earlier.
He assumed the gala would be an opportunity to repair his reputation.
He had no idea that I would be there.
The evening of the event, I stood in front of my mirror wearing a deep blue gown Natalie had helped me choose.
For a moment, I saw the woman from the conference room—the frightened woman with trembling hands.
Then Emma laughed from the doorway.
All three girls were dressed in matching red outfits for a private family photograph before the gala.
I knelt and gathered them close.
“You saved me,” I whispered.
Natalie shook her head.
“No, Claire. You saved all four of you.”
Adrian arrived a few minutes later.
He was carrying three tiny red bows because Grace had lost hers and he had somehow decided replacements should come in a complete set.
When he saw me, he stopped.
“You look…” He cleared his throat. “You look ready.”
It was such an Adrian thing to say that I laughed.
“I am.”
We entered the ballroom together.
The room glittered beneath crystal chandeliers. Cameras flashed near the entrance. Conversations echoed across the marble floor.
Then the crowd grew quieter.
People turned toward us.
I saw Ryan near the center of the room with Savannah on his arm.
His expression changed the moment he recognized me.
He looked stunned.
I was no longer wearing the loose maternity dress he remembered. My shoulders were straight. My steps were steady.
More importantly, I was not alone.
Adrian walked beside me, not ahead of me.
Ryan watched as city leaders greeted me by name. He watched investors ask about my work. He watched members of the foundation board thank me for helping design the new housing initiative.
For once, no one introduced me as Mrs. Calloway.
Savannah whispered something to him, but he barely reacted.
Later, while Adrian spoke with the mayor, Ryan approached me.
“You’ve changed,” he said.
“I remembered who I was.”
His eyes moved toward Adrian.
“So this is what happened? You replaced me with Mercer?”
“No. I rebuilt my life. Adrian happened to respect me while I was doing it.”
Ryan lowered his voice.
“People are saying you two are together.”
“People say many things.”
“Are you?”
“That is no longer your concern.”
His face tightened.
“I made mistakes.”
“You made choices.”
“I was under pressure. Savannah made everything feel easier.”
I glanced across the room at Savannah, who was busy filming herself beside the flower wall.
“And now?”
Ryan looked exhausted.
“Nothing is easy.”
For one dangerous second, I saw the young man I had once loved.
Then I remembered the conference room.
The accusation.
The empty hospital doorway.
“You have daughters,” I said. “They turned one last week.”
His eyes dropped.
“I saw pictures online.”
“You could have seen them in person.”
“I didn’t know how to come back.”
“You start by taking responsibility.”
Before he could answer, the lights dimmed.
Adrian stepped onto the stage.
