MY FAMILY EXCLUDED ME FROM THANKSGIVING. MOM SAID, “YOUR SISTER WANTS HER BOYFRIEND TO BE IMPRESSED. SHE THINKS YOUR PRESENCE WOULD EMBARRASS HER.” I ENDED THE CALL. THE NEXT MORNING, THEY SHOWED UP AT MY HOUSE ENRAGED—AND HER BOYFRIEND SAID… – News

He became silent.

Mark had handled my family’s property arrangements for years. He knew how many times I had rescued them.

“Are you certain?”

“Absolutely.”

“The current agreement expires Friday.”

“I know.”

“If the extension isn’t filed, Blackwood Residential can begin formal termination of occupancy.”

“I know that too.”

He waited.

“What happened?”

“My family decided I’m too embarrassing to attend Thanksgiving.”

Mark released a long breath.

“I’m sorry.”

“Freeze the family emergency card tonight.”

“Emma—”

“And review every transaction from the past twelve months.”

“That card is in your mother’s name.”

“It is attached to one of my corporate accounts. Freeze it.”

“I’ll contact compliance.”

“One more thing. Check whether my electronic signature has been used on any recent applications involving my parents.”

His tone changed.

“Do you suspect fraud?”

“I suspect entitlement. Let’s find out whether it became fraud.”

The preliminary report arrived shortly before midnight.

I was sitting alone in my kitchen with a bowl of soup when the secure email appeared.

There were seventy-three transactions on the emergency card.

Only six were related to medical expenses.

The rest included designer clothing, spa memberships, luxury resort deposits, restaurant bills, cosmetic treatments, and a diamond bracelet purchased three weeks earlier for $8,700.

Total unauthorized spending: $23,416.

Most of the purchases had been made by Vanessa.

My mother had approved them.

Then Mark called.

“We found two loan applications,” he said.

I put down my spoon.

“What kind?”

“One personal loan and one home-equity application.”

“There is no home equity available to them.”

“They represented the house as their property.”

My stomach tightened.

“The house belongs to Blackwood Residential Holdings.”

“I know.”

“Whose signature appears on the applications?”

“Yours.”

The kitchen suddenly felt very quiet.

“I never signed anything.”

“I assumed not.”

“Were the loans funded?”

“The personal loan was. Forty thousand dollars. The equity application is still under review.”

“Where did the money go?”

“We’re tracing it.”

I looked toward the dark windows.

My family had not simply taken my support for granted.

They had begun treating my identity as another resource they were entitled to use.

“Preserve everything,” I said.

“You may need to report this.”

“I know.”
