She believed she was a good mother; not perfect, not quite recovered, but attentive and protective. My first marriage taught me how easy it is for “peace” to be an illusion. When I left, Mellie was still small and I had already seen too much. From that moment on, I promised myself that I would never allow anyone to hurt him again.
Then Oliver came into our lives.
He was calm, serene, older than me and never tried to replace his father. Instead, he showed his affection with subtle gestures: he remembered how he liked tea, respected his space and left him food when he studied until late. After three years, I really thought we had built something safe.
Then he started sleeping on the couch.
At first, he seemed harmless; he blamed his back, joking about it. But it kept happening. Every night, he started being with me in bed and then he left quietly.
Around that same time, Mellie began to be exhausted; not only because of the typical tiredness of a teenage girl, but because of something deeper. I noticed that she seemed to feel strangely comforted when Oliver was around. That should have reassured me.
Instead, he troubled me.
One night, I woke up and found that Oliver was gone. The house was quiet. Then I noticed a strip of light under Mellie’s door.
My soul fell to my feet.
I opened the door a little… and I was paralyzed.
Oliver was sitting on the bed, leaning on the headboard. Mellie was sleeping by her side, holding her hand.
Fear invaded me instantly.
When I confronted him, he explained quietly to me: she had a nightmare and asked him to come. I didn’t want to wake up.
That hurt more than I expected.
Over the next few days, the suspicion was increasing. I hated myself for it, but I couldn’t ignore it. Instead of asking him directly, I made a decision that I’m still ashamed of: I installed a small camera in his room.
