Part 6: What Dad Had Left Behind

The investigation did not end in one dramatic afternoon.

Real life rarely works that way.

It took weeks of meetings, phone calls, paperwork, and questions we didn’t always know how to answer.

But once people started looking, the truth became difficult for Carla to hide.

Noah remembered a blue binder Dad had stored in his office. Carla had moved it to the garage after his death.

Inside were copies of Mom’s estate documents, account summaries, and instructions explaining that the money was intended for Noah and me.

There were also notes in Dad’s handwriting.

Lily—college, school trips, graduation, first car.

Noah—college, activities, tools for whatever he chooses to build.

Dad had underlined the final sentence twice:

This money belongs to the kids.

The attorney who had helped Mom prepare the accounts reviewed the records.

Carla had withdrawn money repeatedly while claiming it was being used for our care.

Some had paid household bills, but thousands had gone toward clothing, vacations, jewelry, and luxury purchases.

Including the handbag.

Carla insisted she deserved compensation for raising us.

The attorney reminded her that guardianship did not turn our savings into her personal account.

A temporary order placed the remaining funds beyond her reach. Aunt Jenna was approved to take responsibility for Noah while the case continued.

Because I was only weeks away from turning eighteen, I was allowed to choose where I lived.

I chose Jenna’s house.

The morning we moved, Carla stood in the doorway with her arms folded.

“You think your aunt is going to give you some perfect life?” she asked.

“No,” I said. “I think she’s going to let us have our own lives.”

For once, Carla had no answer.

Aunt Jenna’s house was smaller than ours.

Noah and I had to share a bathroom, the kitchen floor squeaked, and the guest room still had wallpaper covered in tiny yellow flowers.

But nobody monitored how much food we ate.

Nobody opened our mail.

Nobody insulted Mom whenever her name was mentioned.

That first night, Jenna made spaghetti and burned the garlic bread.

Noah laughed so hard he nearly choked.

I hadn’t realized how long it had been since laughter felt safe.

The legal process continued through the summer.

Carla was eventually ordered to repay a substantial portion of the money she had taken. To do it, she sold several luxury items, including the handbag she had displayed the day she denied me a prom dress.

When Noah heard, he looked at me.

“Karma?”

“Maybe,” I said.

But it wasn’t the handbag that mattered.

It was the fact that she could no longer control us.
